The talk among many Kenyan moms right now is about that nice tasty treat for kids that comes with a surprise toy. Kinder Joy. Interestingly, I’ve also discovered through my conversations with fellow moms is that the Kinder Joys are not only loved by the kids alone, but by the moms too! Because we love the chocolate inside! I had a chat with one such mom who has been ‘won over’ by the concept of Kinder Joy -Iddah Onyango.
Slightly over a month ago, Iddah’s four year-old son came home with something that looked rather interesting. She’d never seen it before. It was chocolate. Inside an egg. A very colorful and attractive-looking egg.

“Mummy mummy look… we got this at school today. It’s a gift from one of our classmates. He gave all of us as we celebrated his birthday. Look mummy look!” Ian excitedly announced.
The parents of the birthday boy had decided to treat their son’s classmates –about 30 of them, to some Kinder Joy. While the kids had indeed celebrated many birthdays before with different snacks, none had ever been this exciting – where each of them got a take-home gift: a chocolate and a surprise toy, all in one.
The surprise toy that Ian found in his Kinder Joy that day was ‘Hulk’, and since he had been unable to assemble the pieces on his own, he’d asked his mom to help him out. Once done, all Ian did that evening –and the day after and the day after and the day after, was talk about Hulk. He even slept with Hulk. Hulk became his new best friend. A friend he loved and cherished so much.
Iddah, seeing how overjoyed her son was, decided to buy one Kinder Joy for him not too long after. This time round, the surprise toy was a finger football. He basically had everyone in the house play finger football with him, and never stopped talking about the experience.
Then Iddah sat down and thought. Each Saturday, she gives Ian a special treat comprising ‘something nice’, and suddenly Kinder Joy presented itself as a favorable option.
“A snack and a toy combined in one. For 80 shillings. Not too bad. Makes sense, actually, because it makes things easier – where I don’t have to go out and search for a chocolate, then go elsewhere to buy a toy. All in one,” she says.
And that is what Iddah has been doing since she discovered Kinder Joy. Giving him this weekly treat.
“Ian absolutely loves Kinder Joy –more so because of the surprise toy inside. I just look at how he gets so excited unwrapping it, how animated he gets, and the look on his face when he meets his new toy. It’s such an awesome experience for him. He never stops talking about the toy!
Aside from that, I think it makes an ideal birthday party favor for your children’s friends -just like Ian received his first Kinder Joy. It will be the most memorable thing for the kids during the party and they’ll never forget your child and his birthday,” she says.
It’s a Party in the Mouth!
But the joy is not just for her son Ian. She too loves Kinder Joy and often buys them for herself!
“I have a sweet tooth and this Kinder Joy is just perfect for me. It’s a combination of white and brown chocolate, and it comes in a small portion which is good because portion control is very very important :). It’s a party in the mouth!” she says.
So that is Iddah’s Kinder Joy experience. A weekly treat and also the idea of birthday favors for kids. And for mom who has a sweet tooth. How about you? What is your Kinder Joy experience?
