The last round of the polio vaccination campaign in Kenya is currently underway, running from 18 – 22 January 2014. The Ministry of Health officials were in my neighbourhood all weekend, going from door to door giving out the vaccine to children under 5 years. They found us home on Saturday afternoon and administered the vaccine to my two boys- one aged nine months and the other 2.9 years . By the way this time round they’re also giving the babies vitamin A capsules.
Poliomyelitis (Polio) is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It mainly affects children under five years of age. The polio virus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. The virus enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the intestine. Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness in the neck and pain in the limbs. There is no cure for polio, it can only be prevented. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, can protect a child for life. –WHO.
So make sure all your children aged 5 years and below get vaccinated against polio. You can also get the vaccine from your nearest health center. Campaign ends on Wednesday 22nd.
